Investing in Access. Expanding Possibility.

In recent years, University Health has invested in the expansion and enhancement of its care locations to better serve our patients and improve access to high-quality care for all members of our community, whether they have the very best insurance or no insurance at all.

Investing in the growth and development of clinics and hospital facilities has strengthened University Health as an academic medical center, directly benefiting patients through team-based, research-driven care.

The milestones below mark more than the opening of new care locations—they represent University Health leaders, partners and donors coming together to pave the way to a healthier community.

We are grateful to the University Health Foundation donors whose generosity and support made it all possible.

Investing in recovery. Restoring hope.

As a trusted provider of mental health and substance use care, University Health recognized the growing need for more support and greater access across our community. Individuals seeking treatment, their loved ones, and the community as a whole stood to benefit from expanded services.

That need inspired a bold transformation – turning an empty warehouse into the Center for Recovery and Wellness. The center, which opened in 2024, offers outpatient care including treatment for substance use and alcohol dependency, support for compulsive gambling, individual and group therapy, medication-assisted treatment, relapse prevention, education and case management.

In less than six months, more than 2,500 people found support and healing at the new center, doubling the prior location’s capacity to serve those seeking recovery.

Investing in the tiniest patients, from their very first breath

When demand for Level III NICU services had increased by nearly 20 percent in just a few years, the Foundation initiated the University Health NICU campaign to grow capacity for the community’s most vulnerable newborns. Donors’ immense generosity allowed University Health to do just that.

The NICU grew from 5,000-square-feet to 20,000 and licensed incubators increased from 19 to 29. The expansion met the needs for space and privacy by offering individual rooms with collapsible wall dividers. This Level III NICU is fully-equipped for treating babies born as early as 27 weeks.

Our neighbor, Children’s Mercy Hospital, has a Level IV facility, which specializes in neonatal surgeries. Together, services complement each other to ensure all babies, and their moms, who come to them receive the highest level of care.
